Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium is a government initiative designed to target resources on those pupils deemed to be from a disadvantaged background.

Specifically, the Pupil Premium money is provided for those pupils who have been on Free School Meals (FSM) at any point over the past 6 years (FSM6), those children who are or who have been looked after (CLA) or children who have at least one parent who has served in the forces whilst they have been alive (SC).

Neither the government nor any government agencies have dictated how the Pupil Premium money should be spent, but what is clear is that the money should be used to promote strategies which narrow gaps in progress and attainment for disadvantaged students. The best practice for the use of the Pupil Premium is to spend it on whole school initiatives, rather than designate money to individual pupils.

At Beverley Grammar School, any student who is not meeting expected progress will be given a wealth of support and it is academy policy that teaching staff, non-teaching staff and governors support students eligible for the Pupil Premium and ensure they do not fall behind (or catch up if they are behind when they arrive with us).  The Senior Leadership’s aim for all students eligible for Pupil Premium is that they perform in line with non-pupil premium students nationally.

Research has shown that the biggest contributors to student progress, especially Pupil Premium students, is attendance and quality first teaching. At Beverley Grammar School, we strive to ensure that the attendance of our Pupil Premium students is matching that of non-Pupil Premium students nationally. Having good attendance means students are in school to receive high quality teaching and receive the support they need.
