Special Educational Needs and Disability Provision

Our Aims

Beverley Grammar School is fully inclusive. Our Learning Support Department is a key element to the school’s aim to ensure barriers to learning are removed, providing support which allows students to grow in confidence and independence.

Students with SEND attend mainstream classes and are fully integrated into the school community. We want our students to achieve their true potential. We pride ourselves on being open, friendly and caring. Listening to student views and developing positive relationships with parents and carers are at the heart of what we do.

Our Team

The department is staffed by our committed and enthusiastic team of Learning Support Associates, our ELSA and LS team leader, our SEND admin assistant and our Director of SEND (SENCO). They have experience and knowledge in many areas of SEN and disability including Autism, ADHD, Hearing impairment, Visual impairment and Social and Emotional Mental Health difficulties.  Our Learning Support staff are involved in running school extra-curricular activities including homework club, table tennis and chess.

Our Provision

The team supports all areas of the curriculum in all key stages and we link with all curriculum areas ensuring information and resources are shared to provide inclusive support. 

Students on the SEND register are allocated a Learning Support Associate (LSA) as a ‘key worker’ or ‘key link’. This is someone who acts as an advocate between the student, staff and parents and carers ensuring needs are being met and communication is effective.

LSAs run interventions to support students in developing key skills needed across the curriculum. These include programmes focussing on social skills, reading, spelling, handwriting, organisation and memory. We provide 1 to 1 mentoring for our KS4 and KS5 students with SEND.

The team provides exam access arrangements to all identified students informally at KS3 and then formally for assessments and external exams at KS4 and KS5.

Our Facilities

The Learning Zone is open to all students at Beverley Grammar School ensuring that every student has access to support they need.

Opening from 8:30am each morning, it has a staffed after-school homework club which runs Monday – Thursday until 4:30pm. The Learning Zone is staffed throughout break and lunch times ensuring students have a safe haven to relax and recharge.

Our lunchtime Games club is a popular part of the school day for many students, giving them an opportunity to meet up with friends or meet new people. We have a range of board and card games from Connect Four to Uno. 

We have a number of Chromebooks and Reading Pens for students who need support with their writing or with accessing the curriculum. These are loaned to students who meet the criteria to loan on a daily basis and can be collected each morning, fully charged. 

The department has a large room with computers for homework and study use during opening times. We have a smaller room for interventions and a quiet and calm tranquillity room which is popular with students.

Neurodiversity Referrals

We are able to make referrals to the East Yorkshire and Hull Neurodiversity Front Door for assessment requests for ADHD and ASD but whilst we understand that some young people are adept at masking their difficulties and therefore students can present differently at home and school, we are only able to report on what we see in the school setting. We will discuss any concerns raised by home or school with parents, carers and young people before starting this process so we can work together for the best possible outcome.

Due to the information required to complete referrals, including responses to private referrals, the school needs a minimum of four working weeks to gather information and complete paperwork.
